In July of 2020, a client directed the therapist to this beautiful location behind the Twisted Olive near Green, Ohio, for a community-based OT session. Walking on the grass, down sloped grassy areas, and locating a bench to sit on challenged his functional mobility skills as well as his visual attention skills. Once at this beautiful spot, the therapist used an app called "Picture This" to identify various trees and plants---and challenged the client's visual discrimination and cognitive-communicative skills while enjoying the beauty of the sycamore and maple trees in the area. This is what home and community-based OT is about. We use real life situations to challenge the development of skills needed for occupational performance. The pleasure of locating this spot, and the peace and joy of enjoying this beautiful location also calmed the client and brought him peace and strength to journey forward.
LINDY BOGGS AWARD 2020
The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) awarded the Lindy Boggs Award to Mary Jo McGuire in March of 2020. She was to be honored at the annual conference in Boston, Massachusetts, for her work representing Occupational Therapy at the American Medical Association as the CPT Advisor for the past 8 years; unfortunately, the conference was canceled due to COVID-19. Nevertheless, her advocacy for the profession of OT still earned her this award. The beautiful plaque is now hanging on the wall in Suite 4 (the office/clinic for Rehab Educators). Thanks to Lindy Boggs for the work she did to enable private practice Occupational Therapy to serve Medicare beneficiaries using Part B funding.
